A FINE 40-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 5796,
for 1860/61, with 30 1/2in. re-browned damascus Purdey two-groove rifled barrels, smooth flat top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON', elongated bead fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with three additional folding leaves, all with central platinum lines, re-blacked breech-blocks, engraved rib-end, platinum line and plugs, fully engraved top-tang with renewed colour, re-colour hardened bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY', sliding safes forwards of the drum based dolphin-headed hammers, chequered walnut half-stock with shallow raised cheek-piece, engraved iron furniture including chequered heel-plate and chequered grip-spur to lower tang, side of butt with rose and scroll engraved patch-box, eyelets for a sling and original brass-tipped mahogany ramrod.
